Shirley T. Herald RID Scholarship

FRID Scholarship for National Testing

Each year, the Florida Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf will award several scholarships to members who wish to sit for national level Interpreter examinations. Two scholarships are awarded for the written examinations (either the NICknowledge-based examination or the RID written CDI examination). Two scholarships are also awarded for performance examinations (the NIC Performance Examination, the RID Certificate of Interpretation, the RID Certificate of Transliteration, or the RID Certified Deaf Interpreter).

Criteria

In order for an applicant to be considered for any scholarship, the applicant must have been a member of the Florida Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf in good standing for the past 2 years. The applicant must also agree to remain a member in good standing for the coming 2 years. Applicants for written tests must either have documentation verifying that they are already working interpreters or must provide documentation that they are in their final year of an Interpreter Training Program.

Hearing applicants for performance tests must either hold a QA or EIE level 2 or 3.  A candidate may only receive one written examination scholarship and one performance scholarship during their lifetime (they may receive one of each.) In order to apply for scholarships, applicants must include two letters from Nationally Certified Interpreters indicating the applicant’s readiness to sit for the examination. Furthermore, the applicant should submit a letter indicating what she/he has done to prepare for the examination. The application must be completed with all paperwork enclosed with the application.
