Diversity Enhancement Committee
The
purpose of the Diversity Enhancement Committee is to increase the diversity
within the population of professional sign language interpreters by providing
access to professional development opportunities. By increasing diversity
within the profession, the DEC believes that the diverse populations of
hearing and Deaf consumers in Florida can be better served.
In order to carry out this mission, the Diversity Enhancement Committee
seeks to:
Create
a registry of interpreters with skills beyond English/ASL interpreting,
such as fluency in other languages (whether spoken or signed), deaf-blind
interpreting, etc.
Provide informational and professional development resources on
the FRID website.
Investigate relevant testing instruments that go beyond English/ASL
interpreting.
Recruit persons to present skill-building workshops on topics related
to diversity, including languages other than English or ASL, working with
multicultural Deaf consumers, deaf-blind interpreting, and more.
If you are interested in participating on the DEC---whether in an advisory
capacity, as a workshop presenter, or on the committee itself---please
contact Rafael Trevino at interpreter@rafaeltrevino.net and attach a current resume.
